Whether you think they are boys who like the opposite sex or boys who act like the opposite sex, it’s undeniable that Boys Like Girls are hooking people with their pop-punk melodies. We cornered them on the first day of Warped in order to find out about the journey ahead.
SuburbanHorror: So, how’s Warped Tour on the first day? Think you’ll last two months?
Brian: I almost threw up earlier during our set, so as long as I keep myself hydrated I think I should be fine.
John: It was hot.
SH: What’s with the band name? Why did you pick Boys Like Girls?
B: Why not?
J: You know what, it was funny there was no band called Boys Like Girls that we could find, and it seemed to fit what we were doing. We thought it was cool.
SH: Do you think it relates to your music?
B: Yeah, it’s just simple, fun, youthful, energetic. That’s what our music is.
SH: It is Boys LIKE Girls or Boys Like GIRLS?
B: It is whatever you want it to mean. It has double meaning.
J: It’s boys that dress up like girls.
B: Oh.
SH: The beauty of a band name. I got banned from picking band names because I picked really bad names. I named my band the Fluckers.
B & J: (Laughs)
B: Wow.
J: Purple Boat!
SH: You could be Purple Boat.
J: Yeah we could...
B: Sorry if there’s a band out there called Purple Boat.
SH: What is your favorite tour experience.
B: This is pretty cool. So far so good. I’m going to go with first day of Warped Tour.
SH: Are you guys’ vegetarians or anything?
B: Neither one of us are.
J: I have a nickname. It’s "meat." I can’t do it. I grew up on a farm and stuff, and I’ve seen the PETA videos and that’s cool, but I don’t think it’s really like that. I never saw it like that. I mean obviously the videos are real, and it is like that at some places. But, we try to eat healthy, good stuff, organic stuff.
SH: Are you guys excited for the Warped Tour BBQ?
B: Yeah, it’s 24 hours a day.
SH: Have you guys had fans mob you?
B: I don’t know. I don’t consider us famous.
J: We’ve had some fans and some people stop us. It’s kind of weird, we’re just regular guys.
SH: Like you look around to see if someone else is there, and they’re coming for you!
J: Yeah people are like, "Hey! Can I?" and I’m like, "FUCK! Are you talking to me!?"
SH: Where do you get most of your material for your songs?
B:We take from personal experiences and stuff.
SH: Take your favorite song from your album and talk about it.
B: I really like "Hero/Heroine" because of the way it came together, and it’s very dynamic as a song. It’s very different.
J: Either "Up Against the Wall" or "Me and My Medication." They’re two of the darker songs on the record, more moody. A little harder, more of my style.
SH: Any crazy tour stories?
B: We got in a van accident. It was pretty crazy. We were driving 75 on the highway, and I hit ice. It was because of a banana peel; it wasn’t because of the ice.
SH: YOU HIT A BANANA PEEL!?
B: Yeah I thought we hit ice, but it was really a banana peel.
SH: And you still let him drive?
J: Yeah. It was his turn. Nobody wants to drive.
SH: Do you guys have any plans after Warped Tour?
B: Go to Japan for a handful of dates and then come back and have a little time off. Do some writing. And then a two-month headlining tour with the Audition, All Time Low, We the Kings, and Quietdrive.
SH: Has anyone in your band been there?
B: No it’s going to be a new experience.
SH: Like "Lost in Translation." Is this the first time touring the world for you guys?
B: Yeah we did the U.K. but other than that, yeah.
J: U.K. so far. Canada - does that count?
SH: Yeah. It’s a whole different world.
J: Yeah. (Canadian Accent) You Know.
SH: So what do you guys do on the tour bus for fun?
J: Brian bought some video games.
B: I finally got a Wii. I’ve been looking for a Wii in months.
SH: I will kick anyone’s ass in Wii Bowling.
B: You wish! I lost the Wii Sports. Actually, it’s at home; I forgot to bring it.
SH: Yeah we used to play Zelda in my friend’s dorm room all the time. Warioware... I really want to get Mortal Kombat.
B: Yeah, I heard Warioware was fun.
J: Mortal Kombat! That would be sweet!
