 | ActionReaction Three Is The Magic Number Hope Division/Equal Vision 5.5 out of 10 Band Website
Action Reaction is on the fence between amazing and mediocre. The band attempts to innovate within the strict boundaries of their scene rather than truly innovating. I'm not saying that it's an easy task to create a completely original sound, but it can be done. The group seems too aware of themselves, attempting to create an eclectic sound which in reality is an unsure mishmash of genres that becomes annoying after a while. They don't seem very confident. Action Reaction needs to define their sound more to arrive where they want to be. The tracks all have a consistent aura, but the album is fairly lackluster.
The real treasure of this disc is former Affinity and Further Seems Forever vocalist Jason Gleason. His voice is extremely powerful, doing a lot for the album. Strong as his vocals are, Gleason can't make this album as equally good.
With the group's indie/alternative-based histories in music, it's no surprise that the most well-defined tracks on the album (for the most part) adhere to that formula. The first track, "Sinner's Algebra", and the "Exit Poll Amen" are great alternative tracks. The 'experimentation' is at its best in 'With My Voice", which features an amazingly thick bridge breakdown with an organ line laid over it. This shows the group is definitely on to something, but they are simply not there yet.
The group gets an A for effort though.
