I really don't know where to go with this cd, I kinda get the feeling that neither did Envy On The Coast. Every track on this 5 song EP is different sounding than the last, you definitely get a GlassJAw influence in the vocal patterns, problem is you also get a Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) feel at times. Hailing from Long Island you can also feel some hometown influences such as Taking Back Sunday, and Brand New before they became a shitty, over produced Radiohead.
Track 4 "Suckerpunch" is awesome! Tons of energy, contagious hooks and cliche lyrics, this is by far the stand out track on the record. "Green Eyes Don't Lie" closes out the disk on a sort of Goo Goo Dolls/Augustana extremely radio friendly sort of vibe which is most obvious in the chorus "he'll be gone before the morning". However they totally go and fuck it all up by throwing in the obligatory "breakdown". Bad move. "You Won't Hear This" is a total boner killer. It's your standard run of the mill sensitive piano song that is required on every single screamo, pop punk and rock cd out now.
All in all Envy On The Coast is eeeeeeverything you've heard before, the only difference it's not so annoying, thank god there's no (very audible) screaming. The guy can actually sing if he wants to, which sometimes you begin to question.
The bands press sheet says they've toured with Saosin, 30 Seconds To Mars and My Chemical Romance, and I think that pretty accurately sums up their sound. So if you like the same ol' same ol', yet want it slightly better done, give Envy On The Coast a shot.
