AMELIA'S DREAM
UNRAVEL: RECORDED LIVE AT THE MAGIC SHOP

Amelia's Dream quickly turned into Mike's Nightmare after I started listening. Amelia Gewitz sounds like a cross between Sarah McLachlan and Scott Stapp, both of whom suck. You can imagine then what Amelia's Dream sounds like : fake throaty, mostly acoustic, 'alternative-pop'. It's repetitive, safe, and contemporary. The song "Only on the Inside" sounds like a second-rate Evanescence song (a third-rate band in their own right). Saying the same line eight times in a row constitutes more than an unimaginative chorus -- it's annoying! A few of the songs are reminiscent of musical theater pieces where the actors try too hard, but the majority are simply generic.

The artwork is just as lame: a watercolor painting that's been greyscaled. At a glance it resembles a cock and balls with elongated human head extending out of the shaft. Upon further inspection, it turns out to be a naked body with an stretched out neck and huge face. (It's painted by Amelia. How quaint!) The lettering is done with a hand-written font; I'm assuming to make it look 'gritty'. It's an attempt to trick the consumer into thinking the band is hard; but it'll probably just repulse anyone who comes in contact with it. The term "Recorded Live" should be taken lightly. It's not from a show, as one would assume; it's a full-band recording session (as opposed to recording the instrument tracks separately). Steve Albini does that all the time but none of his albums say "Live!" on them.

At least this wasn't a total waste; I'll probably get three bucks for it at Lou's Records when I trade this in.
