BOY SETS FIRE
THE MISERY INDEX, NOTES FROM THE PLAUGE YEARS
Equal Vision Records
9.5 out of 10

Wow? Is that all I can possibly bring myself to spit out in regards to the Misery Index? Hell no! I know a lot of people turned their backs on the band with the release of Tomorrow Come Today, (in an interview on this site, singer Nathan Gray sites the production as the problem) but this is sure to bring them all back! This may quite possibly be the best BSF effort to date.

From the first track "Walk Astray" you know this is the Boy Sets Fire you used to know. Starting off calm and melodic with "Where were you the day they stole our innocence?" and after a minute or so slamming back into powerful, fist raising rock! In my opinion, perhaps the most endearing track is "(10) and Counting" which starts off as an acoustic song and is later joined by full band; however the thing that makes this song stand out is the message. Anyone who has ever been in a band knows the trials and tribulations you go through, and "(10) and Counting" is the story of BSF's road tests. Broken down vans, stealing food, fighting for a couch to sleep on, but don't think they've gone soft at all! Boy Sets Fire still tackles all the issues everyone thinks about but is too afraid to speak up about. Mainly freedom, god, the government.....and what seems to be a big "Fuck You!" to former label Wind Up Records.

The production quality on Misery Index is unmatched in comparison to anything BSF has ever done, or in comparison to any other album out now. This record is easily going to become a staple in punk rock, hard rock, hardcore, metal or whatever genre you want to try to lump them in with.
